Canton Kitchen, now with several outlets in the Klang Valley, started off humbly as Restoran Foon Lock in Kg Bukit Tinggi way back in 1988. As a little eatery in the cool serene foothills serving fresh vegetables from its own farm, the business has flourished when people got to know and enjoy the farm-fresh produce used in the restaurant.
The latest outlet in Sunway Velocity Mall opened recently. Spotting the usual casual setting – simple tables and seating with splashes of fun colours in their unique ceiling lamps, the restaurant let its food speak louder. Canton Kitchen prides itself for its fresh Bentong ginger cultivated in their own farms and features it widely in their repertoire of dishes.
Their most popular item is Meehoon with Ginger Wine Chicken (RM22.90). It isn’t difficult to see why it’s ordered by almost every table – it is truly one big steaming bowl of comfort food! Using free-range chicken for taste and texture, the piping hot rice noodles were fully immersed in the gingery soup rounded off with a good alcoholic kick thanks to the Chinese wine.

Besides noodles, Canton Kitchen’s popularity is also due to its various dishes that are meant to be eaten with plain rice. These are usually their signature dishes, many of which are either Hakka or Guangxi (kong sai) influenced. If you are there in a group to have a rice meal, recommended dishes are the Fried Beancurd with Minced Vegetables, Steamed Tapah Fish with Ginger Paste, Stewed Pork Belly with Salted Fish and Deep-fried River Prawns. These are dishes that would have you piling up the white rice as the flavours are all robust and satisfying.

Another popular dish seemed to be their Fried Crispy Pork Belly. Thinly sliced pork belly were deep-fried till crispy and then coated with a sweet sticky sauce. Personally, I found that a bit too sweet and couldn’t quite decide if that’s better as an appetizer and not as a main dish.

We enjoyed the food at Canton Kitchen as most of the dishes were familiar home-style kind of comfort food, prepared using the freshest ingredients and vegetables from their Bukit Tinggi farms. In fact, these farm-fresh produce are available for sale to diners – just look out for them in their huge refrigerators in the restaurant!
