I’m not a fan of buffets, unless they are of the Japanese cuisine type.  I’m sure many of you share the same sentiments – a Japanese buffet can be rather hard to resist!  Now there’s another reason to stuff our faces because Hana Dining lays out a sumptuous spread come Saturday and Sunday.

Yes, the weekend is just the perfect time to round up some Japanese food lovers in your circle and head out to Hana Dining in Sunway Pyramid.  The buffet is available for both lunch and dinner at:

Lunch:  11.30am-3.00pm @ RM69 per person
Dinner:  6.30pm -10.30pm @ RM79 per person

There are more than 80 items on the buffet menu and for the price paid, you even get a once-only serving of fresh Pacific Oysters (2 pieces per person) and one serving of their House Special Dish for the day.

SATURDAY NIGHT VIBES @ SHOOK! in Feast Village, Starhill, Kuala Lumpur

Where in Kuala Lumpur can you find a nice place which serves good food with vibrant entertainment in a cosily posh environment? And pay an affordable value-for-money charge per head of RM168 nett, for a Saturday evening of good food and good fun? Sounds almost too good to be true, right? It’s true. It’s all happening at Shook! every Saturday.

Located in Feast Village Starhill Gallery at the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, Shook! has been setting standards of dining experiences in the city for discerning guests for years. Now with the recent launch of “Saturday Night Vibes”, its Cirque du Culinaire experience is taking diners to the next level.

The unique dining concept of Cirque du Culinaire offers the freshest ingredients from the various show kitchens; with handcrafted desserts served at table side while being entertained by their very own magicians, entertainers and even clowns. All these certainly set very vibrant and fun vibes to the restaurant – I mean, it’s a really happening scene there.

Now let’s get to the food. Believe me when I say the selections are pretty mind-boggling. I didn’t know where to start because everything looks so inviting and appetizing! The entire spread is a combination of signature dishes from restaurants at Feast Village. These include the critically acclaimed Shook!, Fisherman’s Cove, Luk Yu Tea House, Sentidos Gastrobar – The Latin Grill and Khushi Spice. So my advice would be: take a slow walk through the entire premise to check everything out first before zooming in to your favourites. That’s the only way to do it. But it’s not easy…because it’s hard to pick out the favourites when everything looks so mouth-watering.

These babies were just irresistible!

The Japanese delicacies are screaming my name so how do you pick among the pile of glistening sashimi, the lightly-battered crispy tempura and freshly-rolled sushi? Right next to these are trays of beef tenderloin & sirloin, chicken wings and quails just waiting to be grilled a la minute. Further down, the platters and pots of fresh and cooked seafood beckon – oysters, prawns, crabs, lobsters, clams – you name it, they have it.

Did I say the food selection was amazing?

Chefs clad in bright satiny mandarin robes keep busy throughout the evening dishing out endless trays of kam-heong clams, spicy prawns and lobsters which are quickly devoured. Just how can you resist Seafood Paella, King Prawn Noodles, freshly shucked Pacific Oysters, Five-Spice Rack of Lamb, Snow White Dancing Prawns, the finest Wagyu beef cheeks as well as Tiger Prawn Skewers Seasoned with Togarashi – I tell you, it’s next to impossible!

I love their Sang Har Meen – noodles cooked with bouncy freshwater prawns and then served at table-side. The whole evening was like that – small individual servings of freshly-cooked delectables are brought to guests at their tables

So what’s a Cirque experience if not for another key element – the music? Every Saturday night there will be a different notable performer taking the stage with original music and mesmerising renditions of well-loved tunes.

The first to join the hand-picked Saturday Night Vibes line-up was FAZZ, a world-class Malaysian band known for its soulful jazz vibes. Taking the stage at Shook!, FAZZ entertained the guests with its own creative versions of Take On Me, Shooting Star and others; and also introduced the audience to an original number from the band, The Game. In the weeks to come, Shook!’s guests can expect to be serenaded by the likes of Evelyn Feroza, Reza Salleh, Jumero, Bihzhu, and Ryot Jones, just to name a few.

Saturday Night Vibes – an amazing evening of good food, fun and music starts from 6pm to 10pm at RM168nett per person. “TREASURES OF THE SEA” WEEKEND DINNER BUFFET @ ALOFT KUALA LUMPUR HOTEL

Come Friday and Saturday, the buffet counters light up with fresh catches from the sea.  At the “Treasures of the Sea” dinner buffet, diners get to indulge in a variety of seafood on beds of ice, in soups, noodles and cooked in delicious ways kept nicely warm in crockpots and colorful cast iron pots.  All this happens in Nook, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral’s all-day dining restaurant.

This weekend buffet dinner enhanced with Neptune’s treasures is available on Fridays and Saturdays at RM138nett per person, with free-flow of fruit juices and soft drinks.

Besides regular servings of western and local favourites like Braised Beef with Chilli Teriyaki, Chicken Avongolomelo, Irish Lamb Stew and vegetarian dishes of Palak Paneer and Stuffed Beancurd with Vegetable Paste, seafood lovers get to indulge on tiger prawns, green mussels, scallops, squids, flower crabs and bamboo clams cooked in a variety of ways.

We particularly liked the Baked Seafood Parcels, Braised Giant Garoupa Fish Head, Kam Heong Squids and Poached Tiger Prawns.  Even the very simple Prawn Omelette was executed very well and the spicy Crabs Curry had us going for seconds.  The fiery curry was also perfect for dipping freshly-made roti pratha.  Strange but true, this buffet features one of the best roti canai I’ve ever had – it’s so good I had 2 whole pieces all by myself!

Sarawak Laksa is one of Nook’s signature items and it’s a permanent item on the buffet.  The broth is deliciously fiery with fragrant spices and a squeeze of lime makes it all the more addictive!  There’s also a grill station where diners can get their selected seafood pieces grilled upon order.  We had some really fresh bouncy tiger prawns grilled to perfection which were polished off very quickly!

DIM SUM DELIGHTS at SHANG PALACE, Shangri-la Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Brunch on Saturdays has never been better, not since I found out that now you can indulge in quality dim sum in a posh restaurant in an even posher hotel. Oh, it’s also available for Friday lunch and the place is … the Shang Palace at the Shangri-la Hotel in Kuala Lumpur!

From now until 26 August 2017, you can indulge in an Eat-All-You-Can dim sum experience with over 40 choices of dainty dishes at the Dim Sum Delights promotion happening at the Shang Palace. This amazing feast of steamed, deep-fried and baked dim sum along with rice flour rolls, noodles, rice, vegetables and desserts is served every Friday (between 12 noon to 2.30pm) and Saturday (from 10.30am to 2.30pm).

And the best thing is…it’s RM88 nett per person! Given the quality of the food, the classy ambience and the faultless service, I’d say this is quite a steal! Go on a Saturday – you have 4 solid hours to indulge and that can come to some really good dim sum damage!

From the extensive Dim Sum Delights menu, there are 13 varieties of steamed dim sum such as fresh shrimp dumplings, chicken dumplings with fresh scallops, fish balls with garden greens, fresh scallops and mushroom dumplings, glutinous rice with chicken and mushroom (“loh mai kai”), beef balls, chicken claws with spicy Szechuan chilli sauce, steamed chicken wings with black bean sauce, steamed barbecue chicken buns, salted egg custard cream buns, vegetarian yam cake, bean curd rolls with assorted vegetables and chicken porridge. And that’s only the steamed dim sum list!

Coming to the deep-fried and baked dim sum selections, check out the spring rolls with vegetables, fish balls, mashed yam dumplings with minced chicken meat (“wu kok”), baked barbecue chicken pastries, pan-fried Cantonese radish cakes, “Hakka’ stuffed bean curd with chicken and prawn filling, fish cakes with prawn paste, prawn dumplings served with mayonnaise, prawn balls coated with cornflakes, wok-fried radish cakes, sesame prawn rolls, baked mini egg tarts and sesame balls.

I never miss my “chee cheong fun” in a dim sum meal and at the Shang Palace, the steamed riceflour rolls are prepared in four styles: steamed with shrimp, with vegetarian filling, with minced barbecue chicken and Chinese parsley and pan-fried with dried shrimps and supreme spicy sauce.

Besides dim sum and if you can still spare tummy space, there are also noodles, rice and vegetables on the Dim Sum Delights menu. The Stewed Hong Kong Noodles we tried were deliciously comforting – smooth slippery noodles cooked with mushrooms and chicken slices, simple and satisfying. We also had a huge plate of greens (HK kai lan) for good measure!

Desserts should never be skipped and we had a hard time choosing from the 8 varieties of desserts on the menu. My favourites were the house-made sweet bean curd and chilled lemongrass jelly with lime sorbet. Other choices are chilled mango pudding, red bean cream with lotus seeds, chilled Chinese herbal jelly, black sesame seed dumplings in ginger soup, chilled mango puree with sago and pomelo and chilled water chestnut cakes with osmanthus – pick your favourites!

Kampong Festive Dining at FEAST VILLAGE, Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

Let me start by saying the Festive Buffet by JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur happening at Feast Village in Starhill Gallery is one of the best-value-for-money Buka Puasa buffets in town. Priced at only RM98 nett per person, the huge selection of local favourites is unbeatable!

Executive Chef Zaffar Samad and his team have done a brilliant job cooking and serving the traditional dishes that’s so popular with the dining crowd. Besides the main counters laden with local delights, several stalls have also been set up around the spacious dining area to resemble a traditional village.

 

At the centre of the grill station, the roast whole lamb takes centrestage. Mounted on a rotisserie, the lamb is roasted to a perfect golden crisp on the outside while the meat remains tender and tasty. There’s always a queue at this spot and the whole lamb is gone before very long – so I’d advise you to start from here if you are a lamb fan!

For the rest of the extensive spread, take your time to savour the pots of curries and “lauk” – mostly traditional dishes inspired from grandma’s era and recipes. I really couldn’t decide which to start first, from the old-time favourites like Rendang Tok, Gulai Daging dengan Nangka, Ikan Patin Tempoyak, Ikan Bakar, Ayam Panggang, Sambal Udang Petai, Ikan Tenggiri Asam Pedas and host of others.

The satay here is excellent, especially the beef – so well-marinated & tender!

 

Then there are the stalls to tackle – all of them offering mouth-watering goodies like ulam-ulaman, rojak, satay, roti canai, nasi ayam, nasi kandar, noodles, vegetarian, BBQ, soups, sweet porridge, ice cream, fruits and endless desserts! These are stations that can’t be missed! Remember to have your ulam with sambal belacan, sambal tempoyak, sambal cincaluk and even Budu, a classic dip from Kelantan.

My favourite is the roti canai station – they make fresh rotis on the spot and I had two, done extra-crispy! Just couldn’t stop at one – the Marriott hotels’ restaurants do some of the best rotis in town, I tell you! And there is such a good selection of delectable curries to go with the roti.

Save some stomach space for the desserts – local and western types, all ever so tempting! Everything looks so inviting that it’s not surprising that plates are always piled high with cakes, pastries, raya cookies and traditional sweets.
