FESTIVE INDULGENCES at FEAST VILLAGE, Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

Feast Village @ Starhill Gallery is so aptly named – it really is a food lover’s paradise in the ultimate sense. Well known for its huge variety of sumptuous food on the buffet counters, Shook’s Christmas Eve Golden Starry Night Buffet is something not to be missed. Have a DELICIOUS Christmas & New Year!

This festive season, the chefs at Delicious are cooking up some pretty appetising stuff at their cafes. Amidst the Christmas trees and twinkling lights, on the menu are several traditional festive items.

On top of the list is of course the Roasted Turkey Breast & Stuffed Leg served with cranberries, roasted vegetables in chilli and herbs. I like how both breast and stuffed leg of turkey are served together – the best of both worlds.

You can order the whole Turkey Crown as a takeaway too. The Roasted Turkey Crown comes with stuffed legs mixed with sage, chestnuts and onions together with cranberry sauce and turkey jus, all for RM445 (5-6kg).

Things are kept pretty simple and traditional at Delicious. CEO Steve Allen totally believes that the freshest ingredients cooked well are their best bets. Take the Grilled Beef Tenderloin, for example. Fuss-free and grilled well, the beef turned out tender and tasty and all it needed were just wholesome sides like roasted vegetables, creamed mushrooms with a few stalks of asparagus to make it a satisfying dish.

The same applied to the Salmon Gravadlax – a healthy rendition of salmon with Lemon & Horseradish Salad sprinkled with some crunchy walnuts.

The very British Mincemeat Crumble Pie was served as a dessert with Vanilla Ice Cream. There’s no meat in this pie – what a misnomer, so that’s why it’s served as a dessert. The buttery crumbly pastry encasing a thick filling of dried fruits and spices would complete a festive meal here.

“A Delicious Christmas” is now ongoing until 31 December 2015.

If you are dining at Delicious any time now, check out some of the latest additions to their menu. Their new menu now features 16 new and improved dishes that are synonymous with the Delicious brand. Fresh from a food research trip in UK and Spain, CEO Steve Allen was inspired to come up with refreshed versions of their popular dishes, incorporating more vegetables and herbs for a healthier direction.

New dishes like Pumpkin Risotto Balls were a refreshing take – the mushroom and rosemary risotto balls were satisfying, especially when dipped in the zesty pesto mayonnaise.

Then there’s the crowd favourite of Duck Arrabiata Linguine which was cooked in a Spanish-style spicy tomato sauce dotted with black olives, capers and parsley.

Healthy and fulfilling dishes do well in Delicious. Their Chicken, Avocado & Pine Nuts Wrap with cherry tomatoes, parmesan and cucumber was really tasty.

The introduction of more local dishes in the menu is another step forward and gives more variety to the selections. Try the amazingly light Roasted Pumpkin, Coconut & Beef Serunding Salad drizzled with a spicy lime dressing – it’s sure to perk you up.

I enjoyed the Crunchy Chicken Wings with a sesame and seaweed crust dipped in mustard mayonnaise. You can’t go wrong with crunchy tasty chicken wings, really. They were addictive, to say the least.

For the sweet-toothed, the new desserts include the amazingly fragrant Chocolate, Coconut & Pecan Cake and the Pineapple, Watermelon, Passionfruit & Lychee Sundae. The cake was deliciously moist but just a tad too sweet – something which I trust Steve will fix.

And that tall-glass sundae, with all my favourite fruits in one glass, it’s rather irresistible.

It never fails to take my breath away every time I walk past the Orchid Conservatory and enter the Colonial Cafe. This restored heritage building retains much of its past colonial grandeur as can be seen by the beautiful decor of the Cafe. Plush furnishings, rich timber panelling, soft warm lighting and crisply starched white tablecloths set the pace for a luxuriantly cosy dining experience at the Colonial Cafe.

While The Majestic Kuala Lumpur has prepared various festive cheers at their F&B outlets, our intimate dinner preview was a showcase of their Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus.

Our hosts for the evening were none other than the lovely Jenny Low (Director of Business Development) and Adrian Ooi (Guest Transport Manager). The Majestic Kuala Lumpur does hosting in style for sure as we were well taken care of throughout the evening.

To set the mood in the right festive direction, we enjoyed a glass of Torralta Prosecco Superiore Di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene. The smooth tangy bubblies immediately soothed and relaxed us.

Before long, an Amuse Bouche of Chicken Liver Crostini was served. A petite golden toasted bread cube holding smooth tasty chicken pate was a good start to our dinner.

This was followed by a lovely Starter of Woodsmoke-infused Blue Mussell, Scallops and Salmon on Avocado Puree, Creamy Honey Mustard Dressing made pretty with tendrils of micro cress. Honestly, the plating was too pretty to eat! I took several sips of the Dourthe No.1 Bordeaux Blanc and proceeded to dig in, feeling tinges of regret of having to destroy that prettiness. But it was really tasty with the sweet fresh marine flavours lingering in the mouth, paired nicely with the sauvignon blanc.

A typical Scottish Chicken & Leek Soup, cheekily named “Cock a Leekie” came next. Flavoured delicately with chopped leek and speckled with some herbs, the comforting soup warmed the tummy well enough.

In preparation for the mains, a tangy Orange Sorbet in a martini glass was placed on the table. The smooth citrus sorbet was propped with a slice of dehydrated orange, its intense flavour enhancing the palate cleanser in the nicest way. I wished I could have another scoop.

We tried 2 mains: Baked Salmon with Lemon & Dill Sauce and Trio’s King comprising Turkey Breast, Sausage in a Blanket with Herbs Stuffing served with Creamy Mash, Minted Mushy Peas and Red Wine Gravy.

Of the two, I preferred Trio’s King as I found the baked salmon a tad too bland although the clean light fruity tastes of the Argentinian Bodega Norton Barrel Chardonnay did a decent job of jiving up the fish somewhat.

The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend of Dourthe No.1 Bordeaux Rouge paired well with the tender juicy turkey breast and I loved the freshly baked fragrant sausage puff cocooned in crisp layers of pastry. The rounded aromatic complexity of the red wine gave a lingering finish to this excellent main course – I’d go for this again!

Christmas Pudding

For a sweet finish to the almost-perfect meal, there was a Christmas Pudding served with Vanilla Sauce and White Chocolate Ice Cream. A whiff of the spices and dried fruits in the pudding reinforced the festive air.

As I sipped my camomile tea, the plate of Petits Fours was a welcome accompaniment. Christmas cookies and chocolates were just perfect as we sat back and absorbed the beautiful festive vibes, listening to the melodious vocals of the ever-popular Solianos drifting in from the foyer of the Colonial Cafe.

Have a Merry Delicious Christmas in LA RISATA

Christmas is all about peace, love and joy and the best way to celebrate this is to spend time with loved ones. Preferably over some great food too. This year the festive celebrations can be enjoyed over a long weekend so there’s plenty of time for feasting and festivities.

I’ve always enjoyed dining at La Risata for its cosy ambience and good comforting food. The fact that it has stood the test of time means many others share the same view as this neighbourhood restaurant is always busy. Its unpretentious traditional rustic Italian-styled offerings are big favourites and I’d dare say that any item on its menu is never unsatisfactory.

With the upcoming Yuletide season, the chefs have of course come up with some special celebratory dishes. We had a preview of some of these delectable selections recently.

To reflect the colours of Christmas, I loved how their Pizza Mozzarella was jived up more vibrantly with red and green peppers. The fresh-from-oven pizza had home-made smoked mozzarella all over it, spiked by aromatic anchovies and the gorgeous sweet marinated peppers.

We had a light appetizer next, in anticipation of the heavy meaty dishes later. The Grilled Bluefin Tuna with squid ink gnocchi in lemon butter sauce was just perfect to line our tummies. Still delightfully pink in the centres, the tuna slices were juicy and tender to the bite, complemented nicely by the fluffy slightly-bouncy gnocchi.

The two centrepieces of the dinner were the Roast Turkey and Roast Leg of Lamb. Both were executed excellently. The big bird and leg of lamb were roasted to just the right level of done-ness with the meats still pinkish, tender and sublimely juicy. Overdone and dry roasts are always a turn-off and the chefs at La Risata have really honed their skills and timing for these roasts.

The turkey and lamb were done so well that I actually enjoyed eating them sans sauce. That’s not to say the sauces were not good, in fact they were really tasty. There’s giblet gravy and cranberry sauce for the turkey and rosemary sauce for the lamb.

I’m not a fan of stuffings for roast turkeys but I was told the traditional chestnut stuffing here was authentic and fragrant. I totally enjoyed the beautifully roasted vegetables though, from crunchy Brussels sprouts to the sweet baby carrots.

If you love salads as much as I do, the Rocket and Pear Salad with a simple lemon dressing and shaved parmesan is another must-order item. This crisp salad was really refreshing, especially when paired with meaty dishes.

Desserts at La Risata should never be missed. Dreamy Italian favourites of Tiramisu and Zucotto were the orders of the day. I loved how they’re never too sweet and never stingy on quality ingredients that made up these desserts.

With Christmas being less than 2 weeks away, the mood for the holidays and upcoming festivities is certainly filling the air everywhere.
