Where in Kuala Lumpur can you find a nice place which serves good food with vibrant entertainment in a cosily posh environment? And pay an affordable value-for-money charge per head of RM168 nett, for a Saturday evening of good food and good fun? Sounds almost too good to be true, right? It’s true. It’s all happening at Shook! every Saturday.

Located in Feast Village Starhill Gallery at the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, Shook! has been setting standards of dining experiences in the city for discerning guests for years. Now with the recent launch of “Saturday Night Vibes”, its Cirque du Culinaire experience is taking diners to the next level.

The unique dining concept of Cirque du Culinaire offers the freshest ingredients from the various show kitchens; with handcrafted desserts served at table side while being entertained by their very own magicians, entertainers and even clowns. All these certainly set very vibrant and fun vibes to the restaurant – I mean, it’s a really happening scene there.

Now let’s get to the food. Believe me when I say the selections are pretty mind-boggling. I didn’t know where to start because everything looks so inviting and appetizing! The entire spread is a combination of signature dishes from restaurants at Feast Village. These include the critically acclaimed Shook!, Fisherman’s Cove, Luk Yu Tea House, Sentidos Gastrobar – The Latin Grill and Khushi Spice. So my advice would be: take a slow walk through the entire premise to check everything out first before zooming in to your favourites. That’s the only way to do it. But it’s not easy…because it’s hard to pick out the favourites when everything looks so mouth-watering.

The Japanese delicacies are screaming my name so how do you pick among the pile of glistening sashimi, the lightly-battered crispy tempura and freshly-rolled sushi? Right next to these are trays of beef tenderloin & sirloin, chicken wings and quails just waiting to be grilled a la minute. Further down, the platters and pots of fresh and cooked seafood beckon – oysters, prawns, crabs, lobsters, clams – you name it, they have it.

Did I say the food selection was amazing?

Chefs clad in bright satiny mandarin robes keep busy throughout the evening dishing out endless trays of kam-heong clams, spicy prawns and lobsters which are quickly devoured. Just how can you resist Seafood Paella, King Prawn Noodles, freshly shucked Pacific Oysters, Five-Spice Rack of Lamb, Snow White Dancing Prawns, the finest Wagyu beef cheeks as well as Tiger Prawn Skewers Seasoned with Togarashi – I tell you, it’s next to impossible!

I love their Sang Har Meen – noodles cooked with bouncy freshwater prawns and then served at table-side. The whole evening was like that – small individual servings of freshly-cooked delectables are brought to guests at their tables

So what’s a Cirque experience if not for another key element – the music? Every Saturday night there will be a different notable performer taking the stage with original music and mesmerising renditions of well-loved tunes.

The first to join the hand-picked Saturday Night Vibes line-up was FAZZ, a world-class Malaysian band known for its soulful jazz vibes. Taking the stage at Shook!, FAZZ entertained the guests with its own creative versions of Take On Me, Shooting Star and others; and also introduced the audience to an original number from the band, The Game. In the weeks to come, Shook!’s guests can expect to be serenaded by the likes of Evelyn Feroza, Reza Salleh, Jumero, Bihzhu, and Ryot Jones, just to name a few.

Saturday Night Vibes – an amazing evening of good food, fun and music starts from 6pm to 10pm at RM168nett per person. A beverage package is also available at RM88nett (which includes an Aperol Spritz, a light-hearted cocktail of prosecco, Aperol and soda & applies to diners of Saturday Night Vibes only) while the 1-for-1 Happy Hour is available from 9.30pm to 11pm – selected draft beers, house wines and cocktails are served.

Kampong Festive Dining at FEAST VILLAGE, Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

Let me start by saying the Festive Buffet by JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur happening at Feast Village in Starhill Gallery is one of the best-value-for-money Buka Puasa buffets in town. Priced at only RM98 nett per person, the huge selection of local favourites is unbeatable!

Executive Chef Zaffar Samad and his team have done a brilliant job cooking and serving the traditional dishes that’s so popular with the dining crowd. Besides the main counters laden with local delights, several stalls have also been set up around the spacious dining area to resemble a traditional village.

 

At the centre of the grill station, the roast whole lamb takes centrestage. Mounted on a rotisserie, the lamb is roasted to a perfect golden crisp on the outside while the meat remains tender and tasty. There’s always a queue at this spot and the whole lamb is gone before very long – so I’d advise you to start from here if you are a lamb fan!

For the rest of the extensive spread, take your time to savour the pots of curries and “lauk” – mostly traditional dishes inspired from grandma’s era and recipes. I really couldn’t decide which to start first, from the old-time favourites like Rendang Tok, Gulai Daging dengan Nangka, Ikan Patin Tempoyak, Ikan Bakar, Ayam Panggang, Sambal Udang Petai, Ikan Tenggiri Asam Pedas and host of others.

The satay here is excellent, especially the beef – so well-marinated & tender!

 

Then there are the stalls to tackle – all of them offering mouth-watering goodies like ulam-ulaman, rojak, satay, roti canai, nasi ayam, nasi kandar, noodles, vegetarian, BBQ, soups, sweet porridge, ice cream, fruits and endless desserts! These are stations that can’t be missed! Remember to have your ulam with sambal belacan, sambal tempoyak, sambal cincaluk and even Budu, a classic dip from Kelantan.

My favourite is the roti canai station – they make fresh rotis on the spot and I had two, done extra-crispy! Just couldn’t stop at one – the Marriott hotels’ restaurants do some of the best rotis in town, I tell you! And there is such a good selection of delectable curries to go with the roti.

Save some stomach space for the desserts – local and western types, all ever so tempting! Everything looks so inviting that it’s not surprising that plates are always piled high with cakes, pastries, raya cookies and traditional sweets.
