Mid-Autumn Mooncakes at DYNASTY RESTAURANT, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel

The Mid-Autumn Festival is less than a month away and mooncakes are on sale everywhere now!  So where do you get your mooncakes?  I mean, there are just so many to choose from.  At the malls, there are so many kiosks set up to sell these delicacies – so which is your favourite?  Recently I tried some of the mooncakes at Dynasty Restaurant at the Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and they do have a pretty good selection.

The pork-free Dynasty Restaurant has started selling its mooncakes since 29 August 2017 and will be available till 4 October 2017.  The good old traditional favourites made with lotus paste and salted egg yolks are listed, together with redbean paste and the popular assorted nuts.  For the lotus paste option, you can also have the low-sugar white lotus paste or the pandan-infused variety.  New flavours for the baked mooncakes are the Red Pitaya Lotus Paste with Mango (very light & refreshing!).

Bamboo Charcoal Green Tea with Black Sesame

For the snowskins, this year’s new flavours include the Honey Lotus Paste with Chocolate, Yam Paste with single egg yolk, Alisan Tea Paste with green tea as well as the Chinese Chestnut Paste with egg yolk.

If you are thinking of getting some of these for your loved ones, the mooncakes are packaged in Dynasty’s signature boxes of any choice of pieces of traditional mooncakes, 6 pieces baked mini mooncakes or 6 pieces mini snowskin.  Prices start from RM18 per piece.

Dynasty’s mooncakes are on sale at the hotel as well as at Mid Valley Megamall until 4 October 2017.

Discounts & Specials:

  • Free delivery to one (1) location (within 5km radius of Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel) for purchase of 20 boxes and above.  Additional charges apply for locations outside 5km radius.
  • All pre-paid orders of minimum 10 boxes before 16 September 2017 for pick-up between 14 September to 4 October will receive a 25% discount.
  • Selected credit card discounts apply.

Besides checking out their mooncakes, we also couldn’t resist Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin’s Signature Peking Duck which is currently priced at RM60.60 nett per bird.  This promotion ends by 30 September 2017 and it’s a fowl worth going for.  The golden crispy skin was glossy and tasty thanks to the meticulous roasting process which took almost an hour to slowly infuse the smoky aroma into the meat.

The Signature Peking Duck is carved at table side.  The sliced skin is served with house-made pancake together with scallions, cucumber, carrots  plum sauce.  The meat is then cooked according to the diner’s choice.  We had ours stir-fried with ginger and spring onions.

Meat from the Peking Duck, stir-fried with ginger and spring onions – really good!

Monggolian Lamb Chops – deep-fried tasty chops with a creamy tangy sauce bursting with bold flavours – a definite best-seller at the restaurant

Dynasty’s Special Fried Rice – fragrant eggy fried rice served on a pool of gravy with dried scallops and mixed vegetables… something different from the usual fried rice!

FANTASTIC 50% OFF for Weekday Dim Sum Lunch @ DYNASTY RESTAURANT, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur

Half-priced Dim Sum for week-day lunch? Or a create-your-own 4-course meal for RM49.90 nett per person… both happening at the Dynasty Restaurant (pork-free) at Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel.  Yes, that’s where you can get these fantastic feasts!  But it’s only until 29 August 2017 – note that down in your calendar.

I think the 50% Discount offer on Dim Sum for week-day lunch is a good deal.  It’s certainly worth considering if you are in the city within the hotel’s radius.  Who would say “No” to a light, quick tasty meal with a good variety of items to choose from?  Dim Sum at the Dynasty Restaurant has always been very decent, freshly made and served efficiently.

Their Golden Yam Puffs are some of the best I’ve had, really – not many can rival the perfectly puffy lacy yam pastry and the delicious chicken filling.  I think I had 2-3 of these babies all by myself.

Another favourite is the Crispy Mango Prawns – superfresh bouncy prawns topped with luscious pureed mango, how not to love?

Green Dragon Chive Dumplings

Crispy Mango Prawns with Thousand Island Dressing

Osmanthus Pudding

The 5-Happiness Dim Sum Platter is a very thoughtful gesture – it’s perfect if there’s just one or two diners who want to try just one piece of dim sum from several varieties.  The platter consists of 5 pieces of different dim sum items, both steamed and deep-fried ones.

5 Happiness Dim Sum Platter

We tried a few dishes from the “Create Your Own 4-course” set menu.  There are 4 dishes in each of the 4 categories (Soup, Fish & Poultry, Noodles, Desserts) for diners to pick.

Wonton Pouches in Consomme

Stir-fried Duck with Sesame Oil & Oyster Sauce

Pan-fried HK Egg Noodles with Enoki & Chicken

In addition to the above 2 fantastic feasts promotion, you can also get to dine on some of Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin’s signature dishes at specially-reduced prices.  For example, his Braised Oxtail with Garlic in Casserole is offered at only RM38.80 (normal price: RM88) and a Peking Duck at RM68.80 (normal price: RM168).

We tried Chef Kok’s Pan-seared Stuffed Scallops going for RM48 (normal price RM88).  Personally, I found this rather overwhelming – it wasn’t really necessary to stuff any minced prawns into the fresh scallops and the sauce was too heavy.  I prefer to enjoy the natural sweetness of fresh scallops without any redundant embellishment.

Recently converted to pork-free status, Dynasty Restaurant now offers a slick variety of barbecued & roasted specialties, soups, seafood, poultry and vegetarian dishes.  Beef, venison and lamb dishes here would satisfy even the most discerning meat lovers.

PORK-FREE DINING @ DYNASTY RESTAURANT, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel

The Dynasty Restaurant in Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel has recently been converted into a Pork-free eatery. While some chefs may find this a challenge, ie cooking Chinese food without pork may somewhat affect the flavours of the dishes, Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin has crafted a repertoire which proved to be just as good. I had a sampling of some of the new dishes and came away happy and impressed that they were all good! I didn’t think the food was any less superior as the tastes and textures were well maintained by the excellent freshness of alternative ingredients like chicken and seafood.

Chicken and prawns featured predominantly in the Dim Sum items, for both the deep-fried and steamed varieties. I really enjoyed the sweet bouncy texture of the Crispy Prawn Toasts studded with sesame seeds and this sentiment was obviously shared by my fellow diners.

The Golden Yam Puffs were some of the best I’ve had, seriously. Light powdery yam paste covered with fine filigreed batter encased a delicious saucy filling of minced chicken – mad skills at work there.

The steamed dim sum all had generous fillings of succulent minced prawns and chicken. Served piping hot, every item epitomised what good dim sum should be.

I also tried some of the main dishes on the menu and my favourites were the Baked Cod Portuguese style and Szechuan-style Beancurd. Fresh flaky sweet slices of cod fish tossed in a spicy flavoursome sauce together with French beans, ladies fingers, aubergines and petai called for bowls of plain rice! This was Chef Kok’s take on infusing some local spicy flavours into Chinese food.

Baked Cod Portuguese style

Equally appetizing was the claypot of bubbling beancurd with assorted vegetables and mushrooms. This would be something I’d order again and again.

There were several other dishes I tried and all did well – delicious flavours reminiscent of well-executed Chinese dishes…

Deep-fried Oysters

BBQ Chicken with Glazed Honey Sauce

Aromatic Duck Breast – smoked with tea leaves

Oriental Grilled Lamb with Mongolian sauce, saute’ed greens and diced mango

The variety of roasted and barbequed specialties together with a selection of beef, venison and lamb more than made up for the lack of pork in Dynasty Restaurant.

Mango Puree with Sago & Pomelo

Dynasty Restaurant is open daily for lunch from 12.00pm till 2.30pm and dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Dim Sum breakfast is served from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Sundays and Public Holidays.

DYNASTY @ Renaissance Kuala Lumpur unveils NEW DIM SUM MENU

What do you expect from a chef who has more than 30 years of experience making dim sum? Surely it must be dim sum that’s incomparable with quality that’s several notches higher than what you get in many restaurants around town? Surely the dim sum would leave pleasant and lasting memories of a meal well-savoured?

entrance

Have a taste of Dim Sum Chef Chong Foo Tuck’s creations and you are bound to nod your head at both counts. This newly-appointed chef at Dynasty Restaurant in Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel has introduced a range of new and exciting dim sum since he came onboard. To ensure his dim sum meets his exacting standards, Chef Chong makes all the dim sum daily from scratch.

DECO Collage

The new dim sum a la carte menu features 33 items that are available for lunch every day. Delectable choices range from steamed, baked and deep fried to healthy congees. From this line-up, there are 9 signature dim sum from Chef Chong and from these 9, my 3 favourites are the Wok-fried Radish Cake with shrimps and bean sprouts, Seafood Roulade with bamboo pith and the irresistible Signature Chive Biscuits. The thin crispy skin encasing a tasty filling of chives and minced prawns were insanely addictive.

The squares of Crispy Yam Biscuits may look pretty ordinary, even boring-looking, but once I bit into them, I was blown away by the delicious powdery yam beneath the crunch. God knows how Chef Chong did it, but these divine squares are to die for.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the Steamed Buns with egg yolk custard, Emerald Dumplings with fresh scallops, traditional Steamed Glutinous Rice, Oven-baked Egg Tarts and Crispy Banana Roll with Red Bean Paste, not to mention the Cha Siew Bao – fluffy soft steamed baos with delightful chunky cha siew filling.

Chef Chong’s Steamed Shanghai Dumplings simmered in superior stock and filled with piping hot superior broth within the thin dumpling skin can rival or in fact, surpass those from so-called famous Shanghainese restaurants. But you have to eat them real quick – they are best eaten piping hot accompanied by strips of vinegared ginger. There’s more of that delicious broth on the bowl which I totally enjoyed every drop.

Crispy Salad Prawn Dumplings and Prawn Wantan Pouches with Black Bean Vinegar Sauce are heaven-sent for prawn lovers. The prawns were tasty, sweet and bouncy – testament of real freshness.
