BEATS & BRUNCH @ LAFITE, Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Weekends are meant for food and relaxation.  That’s why weekend brunches are a dime a dozen, almost every cafe/restaurant/hotel worth its salt has a brunch to offer in this city.  In the sea of masses, what do you choose?

You choose something that’s a bit different, a bit unique perhaps?  Then go no further than Lafite at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur.  There’s a new concept of brunch at Lafite now on every first Sunday of the month, known as Beats and Brunch!  Starting at 12noon till 3.00pm, indulge on an array of “all you can eat” contemporary French cuisine with delicious entrées, mains, desserts and a la minute delights prepared by Executive Chef Olivier Pistre.  Oh did I say there’s also free-flow of Veuve Clicquot champagne, wines and cocktails?

A mountain of Cadoret oysters!

Things also get jived up with live DJ music as I busied myself at the oysters counter where fresh juicy Cadoret oysters are replenished diligently.  These babies were really good, dripping with marine sweetness at every bite.  I think I had at least a dozen all by myself!

Cherries and strawberries were in season – lucky me!  They went extremely well with the oysters and champagne, trust me.

Cheese selection

The pace picked up as the service crew flitted around the restaurant topping up champagne, wine and serving endless plates of the chef’s signature appetisers such as cold cherry tomato shooters, eggs with smoked salmon, gratinated lobster thermidor, among others.

You can be assured that your mains are always served freshly cooked as orders have to be placed for them.  The mains are 6 gourmet specials of Smoked Cohiba Grilled Wagyu Beef, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Seared Hokkaido Scallops, Pan Seared Atlantic Cabillaud, Eggs Parfait and Grilled Octopus.

My personal favourite was the Seared Scallops – big fat Hokkaido ones seared perfectly and served with artichoke velour sauce.  Yes, you can have as many as you like and I think I had at least six of these!

Slow cooked Spanish Lamb Shoulder served with red onions, parmesan gnocchi, pomegranate gel and lamb jus

Grilled Octopus – Japanese octopus grilled and served with corn cream, Japanese black garlic puree and provencal sauce vierge (French sauce made from olive oil, lemon juice, chopped tomatoes, onions and garlic)

Smoked Cohiba Grilled Wagyu Beef – beef grilled and smoked with Cohiba cigars and served with cauliflower puree, lemon gel and oyster & seaweed emulsion

Pan Seared Atlantic Cabillaud – cod fish from France cooked a la minute and served with white beans ragout, baby squid and veal jus

Desserts galore!

Save some space for the desserts because you definitely do not want to skip those.  Besides the selection of dainty French pastries and cakes at the dessert counter, you can also order their specials: French Rum Baba and Chocolate Surprise.

French Rum Baba – sponge cake soaked in rum syrup, topped with Chantilly cream and served with pistachio sponge, raspberries and raspberry gel.

Chocolate Surprise – traditional dessert made with Sable Breton crumble (French shortbread cookies).  Presented with vanilla ice cream, chocolate ball, chocolate syphon, fresh blackberries and old chocolate sauce, it’s something to die for!

Chef Paul Gardin, Executive Pastry Chef making delectable ice-cream candies to thrilled diners

As mentioned, the Beats and Brunch affair at Lafite takes place on every first Sunday of the month from 12 noon till 3.00pm.  It’s priced at RM499 nett per person.

INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY BRUNCH at the All New LEMON GARDEN at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

It’s been some months since the All-New well-known Lemon Garden was relaunched at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and it was the talk of the town. The last time I went to the Lemon Garden was really many years ago, so when I was there a few weeks ago, it was completely new to me.

After the facelift, the refreshed deco, designed by Bond Design Studio Inc of Japan spots an elegant theme highlighting the modern and contemporary ambience. There’s a warm sophisticated glow to the place, partly due to the hanging pendant lights and yellow light orbs and partly due to the reflective gleaming off-white tiles on the floor.

Outside, the garden terrace and chic al fresco dining area provides suitable spaces for kids to move around. This scenic spot overlooks a koi fish pond and water fountain.

The popular International Sunday Brunch at Lemon Garden is one of the most popular buffets in town. The variety of food served is amazing – ranging from Chinese, Indian, Malay, Italian, Thai, Japanese and western specialities. Most of the hot food served is at live cooking stations, often known as “theatre kitchens” in the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur.

From the Western theatre kitchen, expect to choose from a wide selection of cheese, salads, roast beef, glazed lamb ribs and quiches. The seafood station next to it is constantly swarmed with diners eager to savour the selection of fresh oysters, scallops, crabs, squids, prawns, mussels, sashimi and sushi.

I love the Pizza and Pasta Hotspot as the pizzas are made on-the-spot and baked in a woodfire oven. Pastas are cooked upon order.

My favourite is the Chinese Theatre Kitchen with its premium double-boiled soups, roast chicken, duck, hot-off-the-stove noodles, dim sum and other oriental favourites.

The Roast Duck here is amazing!

Not to be outdone is the Asian Theatre Kitchen equipped with a tandoori oven to dish out naans, chicken tikka and various tandoori items. Besides these, the hot satay, murtabak and roti canai are popular with the crowd.  Signature dishes are the Nyonya Curry Laksa and Whole Baked Red Snapper Curry.

The popular Nyonya Curry Laksa

The stylish Desserts Pavilion is everyone’s favourite and it’s not surprising – the huge variety of local and international sweets is quite mind-boggling. It’s so hard to choose among everything that’s laid out – just go for your favourites! I zoomed in to their durian cake and chempedak puffs!

Priced at RM168 nett (adult) and RM84 nett (child), the International Sunday Brunch starts at 12.00pm till 3.00pm.

SUNDAY BUBBLY BRUNCH @ SERENA BRASSERIE, INTERCONTINENTAL KUALA LUMPUR

Sundays are lazy days for me. I sleep in a bit and sometimes I go to the wet market and sometimes I head for a massage. Most people would go for a long lazy brunch. It gets even longer when there’s champagne involved. If you fall into this group, then why not head for the Sunday Bubbly Brunch at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur? After all, it only happens on the last Sunday of the month – so, that’s not too extravagant an indulgence, is it?

Fresh seafood on ice, crisp salads, sushi, cold cuts and cheeses are great to start the brunch with. There are Fine de Claire oysters, Australian spanner crabs, pacific prawns, slipper lobsters, NZ green lip mussels and Alaskan king crabs to choose from. If fresh raw oysters are not your thing, you can have them baked a la oyster Rockefeller style.

Favourites which stood out were the Beef Wellington and made-to-order Vietnamese spring rolls. The Asian main courses like “Har Lok” (Cantonese stir-fried prawns), Squids with Cashews, Ayam Goreng Berempah and ever-popular satay are not to be missed.

SUNDAY BRUNCH at SAILS RESTAURANT, Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa

During our stay at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort recently, we had a chance to indulge on their Sunday Brunch.  “Brunch at Hilton” took on a whole new meaning with the sumptuous spread lined up at Sails Restaurant, one of their most popular eateries on the property.

SAILS Collage

Sundays are especially laidback in Phuket – it’s something to do with the sun, sea and sky there, I think.  The Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort was one of the very first establishments in Phuket that started the Sunday Brunch.  It’s easy to understand why it has remained terribly popular with the locals and visitors.  You just need to step into Sails at 12 noon on a Sunday and you’ll know why.

SUN BRUNCH Collage

The splendid buffet spread has something for everyone with a gorgeous mix of Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Western and Indian dishes.  The cold appetisers stations were practically heaving with loads of freshly boiled seafood on ice – think succulent rock lobsters, New Zealand mussels, sweet tiger prawns, not to mention the freshest salmon and tuna on the sashimi platters.  At the carving stations, go crazy having to decide on roast chicken, roasted prime ribs, lamb and our favourite whole leg of parma ham!

Three hours may not even be enough to indulge on all that’s served with the endless counters of cheeses, salads, hot dishes, dim sum station, noodles bar and desserts.  And if those were not enough, their friendly service crew also made several rounds to the diners’ tables serving freshly cooked food from the kitchen, like pizzas, pies, pastas and cakes!  Oh, don’t miss out that splendid chocolate fountain too.

At the al fresco dining area facing the pool, a live band added on to the relaxing and laidback atmosphere.  There’s also an entertainment area set up for kids.

The Sunday Brunch is open from 12pm to 3pm, priced at 1,400++ baht for adults (with wine), 1,100++ baht for adults (without wine) and 700++ baht for kids (6-12 years).

Sails Restaurant also serves themed buffet dinner every night.  During our stay, we caught their Seafood Buffet there on a Saturday evening.  The buffet spread was extensive, with a good mix of local and international flavours.

Seafood Buffet Collage

Appetizers and mains focused on the bounties of the sea: crabs, lobsters, prawns, scallops, fish, shellfish – you name it, they had it.  And cooked in a variety of methods, from the simple boiling to the stronger local flavours.

Our favourite was the BBQ station located outside the restaurant where the smokey aromas of fresh lobsters, prawns and squids on the grill filled the evening air.

“Breakfast at Hilton” couldn’t be more luxurious than Sails Restaurant’s daily buffet breakfast.  The cool breeze blowing in from the Andaman Sea has made the al fresco dining area facing the pool the prime location for breakfast.

seating

Sitting under the signature black-and-white striped umbrellas, we took our time savouring the sumptuous breakfast.  After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and at the Sails Restaurant, the first meal of the day couldn’t go any better!
