SOI 55 – affordable Thai Food in Solaris Mont Kiara

In an area where Korean eateries and coffee cafes rule, Soi 55 stands out very visibly, especially with its promotional banners strung out across the facade. As the name suggests, Soi 55 serves Thai food and its affordable meal sets are popular with the crowd.

We were there for an early lunch on a Saturday and were among the first few diners there. The menu was comprehensive, listing down the usual Thai favourites. We started off with some Thai Milk Tea and Lemongrass Tea while perusing the menu.

Food took some time to arrive. The Seafood Tomyum came piping hot and had all the right spicy tangy flavours and aromas. That’s one dish we truly enjoyed as I felt it had all the right Thai elements in it.

Seafood Tomyum (RM25)

We tried a few other dishes, like the Fried Thai Fish Cakes, Pandan Leaves-wrapped Chicken, Stir-fry Chicken with Basil Leaves & Century Egg and Stir-fry Kai Lan. Unlike their tomyum, I felt these dishes didn’t quite shine like they should. The two chicken dishes could have done better with more aromatics and taste. The fish cakes needed more punch and spice. I had the feeling that the dishes would do well with diners who prefer “localised” Thai food.

Fried Fish Cake (RM15/5pcs)

Stir-fry Kai Lan

Fried Pandan Leaves-wrapped Chicken (RM20/6pcs)

Stir-fry Chicken with Basil Leaves & Century Egg (RM20)

We tried three of their desserts and found them to be just average…

Sticky Rice Mango (RM20)

Tab Tim Krob (waterchestnuts rubies in coconut milk) RM5.90

Sea Coconut

Soi 55 has good potential and personally I feel they can fare better if a little more attention (and tastes!) is given to the food execution. After all, in a territory that’s full of kimchi and pasta offerings, authentic Thai food would go a long way.
