In less than a month’s time, we will be ushering in the Year of the Rooster. Celebrating the dawn of a new year translates into lots of happy feasting and merry-making for the Chinese (and even non-Chinese alike!). In preparation of the upcoming lunar festivities, restaurants have come up with special meal sets for this period.
Le Mei is the Chinese restaurant at the newly-opened Le Meridien Putrajaya. It’s so new that everything in this swanky hotel is sparkling with lots of cheerful colours with a faint hint of new paint still lingering in the air. The spacious restaurant is beautifully-appointed, starting with the impressive entrance.
The interior setting showcases a classy blend of traditional oriental art and culture that inevitably draws gasps and smiles of appreciation as one steps inside. One section of the walls is elegantly embellished with cherry blossom motifs and this floral theme is echoed in some of the back-upholstery of the dining chairs. The private dining rooms are all stunning with gorgeous padded walls in a riot of classy designs and colours.
The refreshing and pretty floral deco of Le Mei is just perfect for their Chinese New Year dining theme of “Treasuring the Splendour of Spring”. Several specially-curated menus are available from 8 January till 18 February 2017. Headed by Chef Michael Wong, the menus promise signature Cantonese dishes which are symbolic of Chinese New Year celebrations.
Starting from RM1,688 nett (Spring & Happiness Set), there are also the Everlasting Prosperity Set at RM2,288 nett, Wealth & Fortune Set at RM3,388 nett and the ultimate Emperor Set at RM8,888 nett! Each menu comes with a bottle of celebratory wine or champagne.
Recently, we had a sampling of some of the dishes from the various menus.
Yee Sang is a must for the Chinese New Year. We tried the Four Seasons Prosperity Yee Sang, a medley of butterfish, salmon, tuna and jellyfish tossed with crispy shredded treasures and blackcurrant plum dressing.
Next was the nourishing Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Whole Abalone, Dried Scallops, Vegetables and Bamboo Pith. Served in individual bowls, the piping hot soup restored vitality and warmed our stomachs well.

Braised Japanese Sun-dried Scallops, Dried Oysters and Fatt Choy
Baked Salmon Fillets with Honey and Onion Rings
In case there’s still stomach space, a serving of Wok-fried Rice with Diced Lobster topped with tobikko and bonito flakes would be a good option.
Desserts are a must and the Le Mei chefs did a good rendition of some traditional sweets…
