STAYCATION at PULLMAN KUALA LUMPUR CITY CENTRE

The Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre is located in one of the most strategic spots in the city. It’s right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s shopping, dining and business hub … the popular spots are within easy and convenient connection as there’s a sky-bridge linking the hotel to the surrounding go-to areas. Pullman KLCC comprises two distinctive towers housing 450 rooms and suites as well as 157 residences.

We had a chance to check-out the hotel in a recent staycation. To beat the busy traffic, it’s easy to take the MRT and get off at the Pavilion-Bukit Bintang station and from, it’s just a short walk through Pavilion Shopping Mall to the sky-bridge connected to the Pullman KLCC! Stepping into the welcoming reception, we were whisked up to Level 4 for a personalized check-in at the Executive Club Lounge. Checking-in was a breeze by the super-efficient friendly reception personnel and we were given the keycards to our Premium Grand Deluxe Room.

Swiping our access card, we were immediately taken with the lavish corner Premium Grand Deluxe Room that was our abode for the following two nights. The spacious upper-floor 581 sq ft room came with panorama windows giving us bright natural light and a gorgeous sweeping view of the glittering city skyline. With a deco theme of calming shades of grey and violet, we loved the futuristic fittings and ambience of the room.

View from our room!

Besides the usual amenities in the room, we were delighted with these…
2 TVs! 49-inch and 55-inch LED TVs with a wide variety of channels
High speed wifi
Minibar with Nespresso coffee machine
Sexy curved wide work desk

Such a pretty & delicious Welcome Treat!

Guests staying on the Executive Club Floors have access to the hotel’s exclusive Executive Club Lounge where daily breakfast, afternoon tea, all-day refreshments as well as premium wine and cocktails are served. Besides these, 3 pieces of complimentary laundry is provided daily, 1 hour free use of meeting room facilities and late check-out at 4pm (subject to availability) are offered. There’s also 24/7 room service available to ensure no guest ever goes hungry, at any time.

Executive Club Lounge
Once we have unpacked and settled in to our very comfortable room, we went to check out the Executive Club Lounge. We loved the upscale spacious lounge with its stylish contemporary edge, softened with lovely local traditional art pieces. Service and hospitality was faultless. We found ourselves spending quite a lot of time enjoying this exclusive space during our stay – for breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails.

We enjoyed the exclusive breakfast here which was a combination of buffet and a la carte orders. We had hot cooked-to-order items like noodles, roti jala and piping hot English breakfast platter! In the evenings, we chilled out with handmade signature canapes, speciality coffee & tea, premium wines, craft beers and cocktails.

Wellness Floor
On the wellness floor of the hotel is one of our favourite spas. Vibes Spa is a welcome sanctuary to experience an array of therapeutic remedies carefully selected to suit a high-paced lifestyle. We had the 90-minute Vibes Signature Massage and it’s one of the best sessions we’ve ever had. The therapists were so spot-on with their firm rhythmic strokes that peeled away our muscle fatigue in the most relaxing manner.

On the same level, the Fit Lounge’s cardio and weight machines face the tropical garden – just the perfect landscape for an invigorating workout.

The outdoor pool is open from sunrise until after sunset… use it as you please, whether to wake up or to wind down after a busy day. In fact, the Terrace Poolside Bar & Grill will have you lounging by the pool endless hours with cold beers, house cocktails, fresh juices and if you are hungry, there’s a tasty selection of Western and Asian snacks, sandwiches, salads, main courses and desserts.

The 3 main F&B outlets in Pullman KLCC are Sedap Restaurant, Red Chinese Cuisine, Blu Bar & Cigars and Enju Japanese Restaurant. Enju will be covered in a separate review – look out for it soon!

Deep and comfortable seats in Blu Bar & Cigars lounge! Sink into these deep plush armchairs and enjoy drinks from an extensive wine list and premium whiskies

SEDAP Restaurant
This is the hotel’s all-day dining and home to buffets at breakfast and dinner. The breakfast spread is fabulous and always a busy time for the restaurant. Besides the usual western and local dishes, there are also some live cooking stations set up.

Sedap Restaurant is very popular with guests!

Egg Station and Noodles Station are pretty regular, as in most hotels but what stands out at Pullman KLCC are their Kaya Toast and Roti Canai stalls. The kaya toasts are made from thick fluffy “roti Bengali” toasted-on-the-spot on a charcoal stove! Besides having these smothered with butter and kata, we also ordered some thick toasts which we dunked into the delicious curries from the Indian counter! The chef at the Roti Canai may seem a bit dour but he made some really good roti!

He makes good rotis!

RED Chinese Cuisine
RED Chinese Cuisine is one of the most stunning restaurants in town. As its name suggests, the red theme runs through the restaurant and it’s presented in a modern, stylish and innovative concept. Do read my earlier posts on RED Chinese Cuisine here and here.

The restaurant specialises in modern Chinese cuisine featuring live seafood, dim sum, traditional favourites curated by a team of talented and dynamic team. During this staycation, we indulged on some of the RED’s signature dim sum and special dishes. Dim Sum Brunch is available every weekend as well as on à la carte orders for daily lunch and dinner.

Pullman KLCC is a great choice if you are looking to stay in Kuala Lumpur city centre, close to every shopping, dining and commercial convenience. Whether it’s for business or leisure, the hotel’s service and hospitality are warm and welcoming. And if you choose to spend more time in their elegantly-appointed rooms and enjoy the facilities, there are good dining options in the in-house restaurants.

Satisfy your Shabu-Shabu Cravings at WAGYU MORE, Sunway Pyramid

Following the immense success of its flagship outlet in The Gardens Mall, Wagyu More recently opened another outlet at Sunway Pyramid Mall. Well-known for their money-for-value premium Japanese Shabu-Shabu, this All-You-Can-Eat restaurant is all set to satiate shabu-shabu fans in this part of town.

There’s always a queue outside Wagyu More, a testament to its popularity. The playful theme of its bright and colourful interior is like a magnet to diners. The service crew is really efficient and once guests are seated, recommendations for soups are immediately offered. Wagyu More serves 8 varieties of soup base: Pork Bone, Spicy Pork Bone, Collagen Chicken, Sukiyaki, Kimchi, Kombu, Miso and Tomato. Diners also have the option to upgrade their soup base to Mala Soup and Herbal Soup with additional charge of RM4.80++ per soup. Diners can choose up to 2 soup base as both single and communal pots are available.

Herbal Soup + Mala Soup!

While waiting for the soups to boil, I went over to the condiments counter and made my own concoction of dip. Have fun mixing from the goma sauce, ponzu sauce, red More hot sauce, Wagyu More’s special hot sauce, grated ginger, chopped coriander and much more.

The key to a good shabu-shabu is of course the use of fresh premium quality ingredients and meats. Wagyu More’s offering of well-marbled premium cuts and crisp seasonal vegetables is what diners look for when they dine here. Quality meat cuts are what set them apart from other similar eateries and there’s a good variety of freshly-cut-upon-order meats to choose from: Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef, Australian Wagyu Beef, US Angus Beef, Australian Beef Chuck Roll, Australian Beef Brisket, US Pork Loin, Imported Pork Belly, Imported Pork Collar and more.

Wagyu More’s All-You-Can-Eat Buffet is priced at RM38.80++ per person for Lunch (11.00am-4.00pm) and RM48.80++ per person for Dinner (5.00pm-10.00pm). Additional RM3.00++ is chargeable during weekends and public holidays.

For a more gratifying experience, go for their Premium Buffets as Wagyu More serves 4 types of Premium Buffets (all day):

1. Black Angus Beef Buffet @ RM68.80++ per person – with unlimited Black Angus Beef and all offerings from the standard buffet
2. Spanish Iberico Pork Buffet @ RM98.80++ per person – with unlimited Spanish Iberico Pork, Black Angus Beef and all offerings from the standard buffet
3. Australian Wagyu Buffet @ RM148.80++ per person – with unlimited Australian Wagyu Beef, Spanish Iberico Pork, Black Angus Beef and all offerings from the standard buffet
4. Japanese A5 Wagyu Buffet @ RM388.80++ per person – with unlimited Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef, Australian Wagyu Beef, Spanish Iberico Pork, Black Angus Beef and all offerings from the standard buffet

Platters of meat can also be ordered individually as a la carte items

On the other hand, light eaters can opt for the Weekday Set Lunch with a dining time of 60 minutes – choose from:

1. Buffet Table All-You-Can-Eat @ RM22.80++ per person – enjoy free-flow meatballs, vegetables, drinks, hot dishes, soft serve icecream & desserts from the buffet counters
2. Single Plate Meat @ R28.80++ per person – choice of 1 plate of Pork/Beef/Lamb/Chicken/Fish & enjoy free-flow meatballs, vegetables, drinks, hot dishes, soft serve icecream & desserts from the buffet counters

I’m usually not a fan of buffets but I do love hotpots. Wagyu More shabu-shabu buffets are pretty good value for money. Their soups are well-boiled and tasty; I can get my unlimited flow of fresh vegetables, fuchuk, mushrooms and the hot food and desserts selections are very decent. So, yes – this is one buffet I’d go back again for… especially when I crave for a good bubbling hotpot with family and friends!

AFTERMEAL DESSERTS, Damansara Uptown (Sweet Vouchers for you!)

This dessert shop is making waves in the Damansara Uptown area. And I can totally understand why. I have also become a fan of this place! This is where people go, after meals, if they want some good desserts. The menu is simple – just a combination of hot and cold desserts, served with sprinkling of Taiwanese, Korean, Chinese and also local styles and flavours. Think shaved ice, boba, jelly, popping pearls, sweet potato and taro balls … sound familiar?

This casual sweet eatery is run by Pei and his team of young entrepreneurs. When we were there, the place was really bustling and very soon, there was a queue outside the shop. The enterprising young folks quickly brought out stools for the waiting guests – really thoughtful and customer-friendly!

First thing to try here is their Kakigori – shaved ice desserts. They have a damn good ice-shaving machine … the shaved ice is bingsu-grade … soft, light and fluffy! The signature item is the Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori where premium quality tieguanyin tea is used. The tea flavour is fragrant and discernible, nicely absorbed in the soft fluffy shaved ice. It’s served with a bowl of handcrafted sweet potato and taro balls and boba pearls soaked in a light brown sugar syrup. Other flavours to check out in the kakigori range are Royal Matcha Latte, Dark Milo, Horlicks, White Coffee and Durian & Coconut – flavours that Malaysians love!

Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori (RM22)

I love grass jelly and the Classic Grass Jelly here is excellent. The bowl, with shaved ice at the bottom is piled high with wobbly jelly and crowned with red beans and crunchy roasted almond flakes. Like the kakigori items, it’s also served with a bowl of sweet potato and taro balls and boba pearls soaked in a light brown sugar syrup. Fresh milk is served separately which you then pour all over the jelly before digging in!

Classic Grass Jelly (RM16)

We adore the Classic Calamansi Yokan too. It’s so refreshing! The calamansi juice has been added to the ice and that’s how the taste has been intensified. Beneath the thick slices of calamansi yokan, there’s honey sea coconut, white pearls and passionfruit popping pearls – so much to love!

Classic Calamansi Yokan (RM16)

I’m a fan of hot ginger soup and the Bentong Ginger Soup with Black Sesame Rice Balls is right up my alley. 3 levels of “hotness” are offered: Light, Normal or Spicy. Of course my choice is “spicy”!

BRASSERIE LÉON, TTDI: Simple Classic French Fares

Located on the 1st floor of Greens Terrace in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Brasserie Léon is a welcoming eatery for a simple French meal. There’s an easy contemporary feel in the chic shades of blue and grey echoing throughout the restaurant. In the day time, lots of natural light streams into the premise through the huge expanse of glass occupying most of the walls. But we were there for dinner and the whole place took on a cosy romantic ambience, thanks to the enchanting fairy lights and muted rays from the overhead floral light fittings.

Glancing through the menu, I could see that chef-owner Geoffroi Herin (who hails from Lyon, France) likes to keep things simple and pretty basic. His repertoire is kept to the traditional and essential – this is the place for a fuss-free simple French meal. After all, the brasserie is modelled after French eateries known for simple inexpensive single dishes. The menu lists a concise selection of Bites (appetisers), Specialities (Mains), Add-Ons and Desserts. There’s also a short selection of beverages, bottled beers, red & white wines and whiskies.

Homemade Bread with Butter (RM5.90)

Once we were seated, appetisers like the classic Escargots – half a dozen of the baked shell-less version cooked in fragrant garlic parsley butter sauce made its way to our table. This was followed by the Flame Cured Mackerel served with cucumber and shallots vinaigrette. The thin slices of mackerel, pickled with rice vinegar still maintained a lovely umami marine taste.

The Deep-fried Brie Cheese Balls were full of rich creamy cheesy goodness. I particularly loved the sweet red onion ginger chutney served as it cuts through some of the richness of brie.

The signature item here is the classic French Steak & Fries served with a secret sauce – a favourite with many. The Roast Spring Chicken is also another popular order here – a dish you can order with a variety of bites (sides). Love how these are served on those oval stainless steel plates commonly used in Chinese eateries!

Brasserie Léon serves some of the best fries around. I’m not a fan of fries generally but I found I couldn’t stop popping those addictive fries into my mount! The double-fried crispy fries were so good I was almost tempted to order another portion!

Half Dozen Baked Shell-less Escargot (RM16.90) with garlic butter

Deep-fried Brie Cheese with red onion chutney (RM15.90)

Flamed Cured Mackerel (RM13.90) with Cucumber and shallots vinaigrette

Roast Spring Chicken (half bird) RM19.90 served with traditional chicken jus, house-made French fries and green salad

Grilled Australian Grain-fed Beef Striploin (180g) RM49.90 served with secret signature sauce, house-made French fries and green salad

At Brasserie Léon, raclette is one of the highlights. We thoroughly enjoyed the Traditional version: delicious warm gooey cheese scraped onto a plate of steamed potatoes, gherkins and pickled onions. It can also be served with Poutine, Shredded Roast Chicken, Smoked Duck Breast or Streaky Beef. Another option is to have raclette scraped over their favourite dishes from the menu (at RM22.90/100g).

Traditional Raclette (RM32.90)

Save some space for desserts. Don’t expect any fancy sweets as in typical brasserie style, dessert options were just Creme Brûlée, Chocolate Mousse and Tiramisu Verrine.

Creme Brûlée (RM9.90)

Chocolate Mousse (RM10.90) 70% dark chocolate

Tiramisu Verrine (RM10.90 with home-made espresso genoise

So the next time you are craving for some French bites, Brasserie Léon is just the spot to have a simple fuss-free meal that won’t bust your wallet.

Belly-good Christmas Feasts at ONE WORLD HOTEL PETALING JAYA

With the festive season already almost in full swing, restaurants and hotels in the city are all gearing up for the celebrations. One World Hotel in Bandar Utama is one of the bigger hotels in this part of town and it’s one of my favourites whenever “festive buffets” is mentioned. You see, the Cinnamon Cafe in this hotel hosts one of the best buffets on any ordinary day, so what more when the festive season beckons?

The culinary team in this hotel goes all out when it comes to festive buffets, regardless of the festival. So, come Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas and New Year, the chefs are all geared up to offer the best gastronomic treats to diners.

What’s Christmas without turkey, right? This year, in addition to the traditional Roast Turkey with all the trimmings, there’s another version called Turkey Mandy served at Cinnamon Cafe. The seasonings and marinade for this is more spicy and it’s perfect when eaten together with buttered rice and roasted vegetables.

Some of the special dishes concocted for the festive buffets are Chicken Cordon Bleu, Seafood Au Gratin, Baked Sea Bass with Garlic Paste and Mushroom Vinaigrette, Seared Beef and Oxtail Marmalade with Natural Jus. At the carver table, don’t miss the Crusted Roast Strip Loin.

Besides the festive items, the buffet also serves the regular favourites, both local and international dishes. My favourites are their Hainanese Chicken Rice, the Indian food station (the curry fish head is da bomb!), the Seafood-on-Ice and the Japanese food counter.

The gaiety of the season is best reflected in the amazing range of colourful cakes, pastries, special cookies and a whole lot more at the desserts section. Chocolate & Raspberry Yule Logs, Gingerbread Houses, Mince Pies, Fruit Cakes, Christmas Puddings, Churros with Christollen Spiced Caramel Sauce are just some of the festive sweets to look out for. There’s plenty more, for sure.

’Tis the season to be jolly indeed!

A Taste of Super Foods at RUYI, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Diners stepping into Ruyi now have a chance to savour the first of Ruyi’s Eat Well Live Well dinners, which is available until 23 December 2019. It’s a collaborative effort with Cabana, KapowBalls and Kintry Artisan Food – all purveyors of healthy food.

Cabana is popular with their Acai Bowls and Smoothies using organic acai berries, freshly blended and free from refined sugars. Kintry is a home-grown Malaysian company specializing in healthy snacks made from scratch. Their top-selling halal artisanal snacks such as salted egg potato crisps, cookies and granolas are well-known in the market. Kapow Balls are guilt-free low-calorie dessert balls made from all-natural ingredients … yummy stuff like chocolates, dates, all kinds of nuts, almond butter, chia seeds, berries etc.

Working with these entities, the culinary team at Ruyi has curated a Chinese 6-course fine dining menu at RM168 per person (without cocktails) / RM198 per pax (with 2 cocktails) for those who would like to try something unique and good for their wellbeing.

Dinner kicks off with a refreshing Gin cocktail served in an earthenware bowl. We love the crunchy honey granola served in it – what a novel touch!

Gin Kiu Blossom with Citrus with Honey Granola by Kintry Food Co

The Winter Melon Noodles look like jellyfish strands but once we bite into this, the burst of sweet refreshing juices tell us otherwise. With a light tangy citrusy dressing, it’s a lovely salad and we eat up every single leaf.

Nutrition Cool Kick-Starter – Winter Melon Noodles Salad in Acai Citrus dressing

Soups at Ruyi is always the bomb … Chef James and his crew brew the most amazing nourishing soups which we always enjoy and can’t have enough. The Collagen Soup is fragrant with ginseng and the fishmaw and sea whelk give it that divine umami taste.

Collagen Soup – Ginseng Broth with Fishmaw Collagen & Sea Whelk

Detox Palate Cleanser – Bird’s Nest Acai Sorbet in Green Apple

Sea cucumber and abalone have all the good nutritious and antioxidant elements for you. Power Protein indeed and when braised with truffle and acai, the good factors just doubled.

Power Protein – Truffle & Acai braised Sea Cucumber and Abalone with Asparagus

Cocktail Palate Cleanser – Acai Gin Coco Loco with Coconut & Starfruit with Pandan Granola by Kintry Food Co

The Fried Rice with Mango and Acai looks so tame but instead of blandness, this bowl of rice is packed with some really nice light flavours.

Anti Oxidant – Fried Rice with Mango and Acai

Dessert is of course the guilt-free Kapow Balls, in Brownie form jived up with crunchy dark chocolate granola by Kintry Food Co
