With the holy month of Ramadhan going into full swing, many are looking for nice venues to break fast. One of the latest hotels to open in Petaling Jaya, New World Petaling Jaya Hotel takes dining to a whole new level with a tasteful take on community dining with its lively market-style set-up at Pasar Baru.

The hotel’s Executive Chef – Alexander Chong, together with his master chefs have skilfully put together a sumptuous buffet spread which features over 100 mouth-watering dishes of local and traditional Malaysian delicacies, promising an exceptional dining experience for all.

Fresh seafood

We started off with a selection of freshly imported seafood such as yabbies, bamboo clams and succulent crabs and prawns. Next were traditionally prepared Malay dishes from the main buffet counter, including Pasar Baru’s signature made-to-order beef and chicken satay, freshly grilled seafood and traditional ‘bubur lambuk’ . Those looking for lighter and healthier options can toss up their own ulam-ulam or pick from a variety of ready-made salads on offer.

Pasar Baru’s magnificently roasted lamb is one of the best we’ve had so far, succulent and crispy to the bite and accompanied with home-made sauces. Actually I felt the lamb tasted better without any sauces!

Finally we ended the feast on a high note, with a variety of delicious confections all beautifully plated at the dessert counter. What I liked about this was that the desserts were kept fresh and replenished often. We had sago gula Melaka, blueberry cheese tarts, a selection of home-made Malay kuih and soft-serve ice-cream.

To add to the merriment of the occasion, guests can get up close and personal with the chefs at the various live-action stations and watch first-hand as they prepare and serve delightful fare, especially the enticing noodles and lok-lok station. Curry Laksa is my absolute favourite here!

The JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur’s buffet at Shook in Feast Village has always been popular. Come Ramadhan, the buffet takes on a kampong festive atmosphere. The venue is transformed to give diners the feel of breaking fast in a traditional village, as the creative displays and stalls showcase Malay cuisine at its best.

Within such a charming traditional ambience, Chef Rafizan Abdul Rahim and his culinary team have come up with an amazing repertoire of dishes. Start with local ulam-ulaman served with Sambal Belacan, Sambal Tempoyak, Sambal Cincaluk and Budu and move on to other appetisers, pickles, salads and soups. From there, do proceed slowly to savour such classics like Rendang Tok, Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak, Paru Goreng Berlada, Sambal Petai Ikan Bilis, Nasi Biryani, Sup Ekor and Bubur Lambok – these are surely must-have dishes during Ramadan!

In the village setting, mouth-watering aromas and irresistible displays beckon from the Gerai Satay, Gerai Ikan Bakar, Gerai Nasi Ayam, Gerai Roti Canai (my favourite), Gerai Mee and Gerai Rojak Buah.

I’m glad I saved stomach space for desserts because the sweet spread seems endless. The colourful local kuih, ice-cream, fresh fruits and western sweets were more than enough to satiate any sweet cravings!

HILTON PETALING JAYA: Experience Ramadhan the kampung way

As Muslims around the country begin their fasting during this holy month of Ramadhan, it’s time to check out certain venues for a gathering of loved ones for breaking of fast. Berbuka Puasa is often made more meaningful when sharing with friends and family. Paya Serai at the Hilton Petaling Jaya is well-known for its splendid buffet of local dishes and it’s one of my personal favourites as well.

“Jom Makan” at Hilton Petaling Jaya this time features a stunning array of 150 dishes covering both traditional and modern takes of everyone’s favourites. The appetizers tables are a good place to start – great selections of salads, seafood bar, ulam-ulaman, jeruk, keropok and various local rojak.

Various stalls are also set up to offer carved roast meats, nasi kandar, grilled seafood, Indian specialities with all kinds of roti (canai, naan, capati, murtabak), dim sum, Japanese favourites (sashimi, sushi, tempura, teppanyaki) and seasonal favourites like gulai kawah, gearbox soup, bubur lambuk, lontong, lemang with curries and rending. Don’t miss out the stalls dishing out noodles, pasta, simmering claypots of gulai, Hainanese chicken rice, deep-fried delicacies and my all-time favourite: satay!

You must save tummy space for desserts because the sweet temptations at Paya Serai are absolutely divine. Honestly, the dessert spread here is one of the best in town. Besides the huge selection of local kuih & festive sweets, there’s also a good selection of western desserts jostling for space on the counters.

This year, in addition to the buffet spread, the Buka Puasa feast includes several food trucks as well. Parked at the front of the hotel, these food trucks serve local favourites like pasembor, cendol, putu bamboo, char kway teow and durians! Well, durians were available when I was at the preview about a month ago and I hope they will still be available throughout Ramadhan.

YG REPUBLIQUE – where K-style Food & Entertainment rock!

Launched last August amidst much Korean fanfare, YG Republique is a fully-integrated K-style food and entertainment space located in TREC Kuala Lumpur. It is a fully integrated K-style food and entertainment space outside Korea.


When you step inside, the cool interior of the BBQ/Grill Restaurant (Samgeori Butchers) greets you. Next to it is the K-Pub which also dishes out food and drinks.

 

Recently we checked out some favourites at YG BBQ Restaurant. The Butcher’s Sampler was a good choice. The sample of 3 Iberico cuts – neck, shoulder and belly came wrapped in a nostalgic newsprint butcher paper, reminiscent of olden days. The premium cuts were then placed onto the table grill and before long, we got to savour the sizzling hot succulent meat. We dug in, initially eating the pork on its own to enjoy its natural sweet flavours and then eating it topped with some of the barchans served. The tangy and refillable dishes of tasty vegetables in the banchan proved to be a hit with us.

Next we tried the spicy but addictive Butcher’s Fried Rice. We really liked this dish – it’s full of “wok her” and tossed with chunks of pork, aged kimchi and chipotle sauce.

Another popular dish here is their Andong Jjimdak – a traditional Korean chicken stew with glass noodles. The flavours were robust, full of umami-goodness and perfect with a bowl of white rice.

KINGS GREEN HOTEL, MELAKA

With Melaka being just less than 2 hours’ drive away from the Klang Valley, it’s one of the most popular places to head to for a break, especially during the weekends.

Recently we took a drive down to Melaka and decided to check out Kings Green Hotel. Located along Jalan Tun Perak, the hotel is actually just 10 minutes away from Mahkota Parade. It’s in a pretty quiet location yet not too far away from the city centre and most of the tourist sites. This boutique hotel is the first Green Building Index (GBI) certified hotel in Melaka.

Checking-in was a breeze. Before long we were whisked away to our Premier Suite. The spacious room has a king bed + a twin bed, large bathroom complete with a bathtub. It comes with all the usual modern room amenities like personal safe, mini bar, flatscreen tv and wifi of course. We loved the little touches of welcome like the plate of delicious local kueh and bars of handmade soap!

Kings Green Hotel has an adequate swimming pool and gym as well as meeting and functions facilities. This caters to their corporate clients or just about anyone who wants to hold some private events here.

There are 3 F&B outlets in this medium-sized hotel (150 rooms). The Hibiscus Cafe is their all-day dining restaurant and this is where daily buffet breakfast is served.  In the afternoon, try their “Sembang-sembang” Tea at the restaurant.  They serve lovely local snacks like cucur udang, cucur ikan bilis, keropok lekor, goreng pisang and fried sweet potatoes.  It’s an irresistible set at only RM8 to RM12, inclusive of 1 hot drink (teh tarik or Nescafe Tarik)

Jia Restaurant serves both Chinese and Nyonya cuisines from their a la carte menu. It’s opened for lunch and dinner and we found the locals love to dine here as well. On the day that we dined here, the restaurant was pretty full and happening! We sampled some of the chef’s signature home-style dishes which turned out to be quite impressive.

After dinner, just adjourn to the top floor where their Green Acres Lounge & Bar is the perfect spot to relax with some drinks and watch the live band performing. On a clear cool night, the al fresco rooftop is just the place to chill and chat.

MEAT THE PORKERS: Soft Shell Tacos and more!

Have you met them yet? The Porkers, I mean.  If you haven’t, then it’s high time you do, especially if you are a porky fan.  Go on, Meat the Porkers!  These porkers, led by Herukh, have single-handedly revolutionised the regular Indian food here to make it more unique – in the porky sense.  Yes, expect to indulge in all your favourite Indian dishes in this restaurant, in porky versions!

Recently, to jive up the menu and also to offer some light bites to diners, soft shell tacos with all kinds of delicious spicy fillings were introduced.  So now, if you just want a quick light meal or you are hanging out there in between main meal times, why not sink your teeth into some delectable rolls?  Top of the list is the Tandoori Pork Ribs – basically it’s boneless as meat from the ribs had been pulled or scraped off from the bones.  The meaty fillings are actually the restaurant’s best-sellers like Pork or Chicken 65 Masala, Butter Chicken (or Pork) and the vegetarian Paneer Varuval.

Tandoori Pork Ribs rank next and fans of these should check out Herukh’s latest version – it’s the luscious pale-looking Tandoori Malai Pork Ribs.  The “paleness” of the ribs is from cheese, cream, spices and blended cashew nuts rubbed into the slab of meat.  Slightly charred at the edges, the aroma from this slab of succulent ribs was just insane!
